Billy Mahonie at The Red Eye 29th Jan 1999: Page 1

'Mogwai', there, I said it. I thought I'd get it out of the way now as that name always crops up in reviews of Billy Mahonie. Now that's done let's actually get on with the review of this gig...

To be honest this was supposed to be a Review of Rothko, supporting

Cay. Alas though Rothko had to withdraw, allowing Billy Mahonie to step in at the last minute.

Tonight they were purveying their own particular brand of epic rock. It's not just duration that impresses here though, because when they get going the sheer

volume alone is enough to leave an impression.

Listening to one of Billy Mahonie's songs reminds me of watching Thunderbirds. Specifically that inevitable point where Thunderbird 2 was hauled out of it's hanger. Watching it lumber it's

way up the runway you didn't care that it took forever, you savoured every moment because you knew something was going to happen on a large scale at any moment. And although the sequence was familiar, somewhere in the middle of its belly was something new.
